Final Standings

Well, King of the Grom is all wrapped up, and what a weekend it was!

It all started when the boys from Minnesota's 3rd Lair Skatepark arrived on Wednesday, December 31. They met up with Mike for dinner to discuss what still needed to be prepared to get everything rolling. Since Thursday was going to be a long day, everyone decided to call it a night early.

On Thursday, the guys from Minnesota got to make their first visit to the Progressive Skatepark. Mike met up with them nice and early so they could get the full tour. After that, they brought out all the dcor. The park experienced a nice little facelift with a ton of new stickers on the ramps and banners all over the place. During all of this, they started getting all of the prizes together. You would not believe all the stuff they had to give away! The sponsors really came through! About 75 bags were stuffed with shirts, DVDs, hats, stickers, mags, stickers, Ollie Pop, and lots more.  The kids were sure to be hype on the prizes. For once, they finished up everything with time to spare and headed back to our house to hang for a little while.

Friday was show time. I was at the park by 9:00 am to start cleaning and finish stickering up the park. By the time we opened up the doors, the place was spotless - easily the cleanest park in America. Practice went on for a while before we started mini ramp qualifiers. As one of the judges, I have got to say, I was completely amazed by some of the tricks I saw. The Pineiro brothers put on a show with old school tricks, new school tricks, and a few things they invented themselves. Micah Wu, a returning competitor, is skating much more technical than he was a year ago when I last saw him. You try 50ing the whole ramp then doing a 270 out - frontside and backside. Micah threw it every try. Expert's number one qualifier, Jamie Foy, could do frontside flips up near the ceiling like it was nothing. Perfect! These kids were landing tricks I could never even dream of landing. Unbelievable talent.

Saturday was supposed to be bowl qualifiers, but anybody in Georgia knows that our daily forecast now includes rain. The bowl was soaked. So we temporarily postponed it. On to street qualifiers. It seems that the talent gets better every year. We had to bump up a handful of kids to the next division because they were just too good. Again, I have to shout out to Jamie Foy: he was the only person to hit the long rail. Next, so the bowl kids could have something to do, we put on an impromptu best trick contest in the halfpipe. The beginners were led by local favorite Shane Wreck with something I haven't seen before, especially out of someone his size. He went up to the extension, set up like he was dropping in like normal, and right as he got ready to drop, did a 180 body varial on the way in. Pretty fun to watch. The intermediates were led by one of the high flyers Lyon who, naturally, got the nickname "Lyon the Flyin" Hawaiian. I held a board out about three feet high, and he did an air from the extension over it. He cleared it by plenty and nearly hit the ceiling. The experts were insane! Stephen Pineiro did a blunt kickflip out on the extension. Jaun Pineiro did a blunt kickflip fingerflip out. But Warp Skatepark's CJ Kelly took the win with a no comply lipslide done with perfection. We had trouble deciding who would win, but since he landed it perfectly in addition to being original, we had to give him the win.

So now it's Sunday. Again we're all here at 8:00 am. Mini ramp finals begin at 10:00 am. Shane Wreck took the win for beginners with about as good of a run as I could expect from a beginner. Something I was real happy to see was 9 year old Hannah Chumley, one of only two girls to skate the competition, got 2nd place. In intermediate, Florida's Tyler Hunger took the win, and for expert, Factory Skatepark's Austin Gordon - the only person staying on his feet for the entire run - found himself in 1st place. I still can't figure out how all these kids were throwing Miller Flips every single try. The street competition was absolutely awesome to watch. There was no lack of creativity or difficulty. Kids were lidsliding un-lipslideable stuff, doing huge manly airs on the snow plow, and every blunt variation in the history of man. Jullius Jimenez killed it and took first place in beginner. William Penniman nailed his run he had been practicing for the past six weeks that included about twice as many tricks as most kids. He even skated most of his last run with one shoe. After it popped off early in his run, he just kept going, and the crowd was going crazy. After expert finished up, Bong Gause wound up on top by slightly edging out Joseph Milazo. A nollie heel up the euro, a BS 50 down the euro, and a crook on the podium were just of couple of tricks that put him in first.

After it was all said and done, we had watch kids from 16 different states skate the contest. People came from Hawaii, Nevada, Illinois, Texas, and Maryland just to name a few. I enjoyed watching CJ Kelly skate throughout the contest as his style was about as perfect as it could be. He landed each trick solid whether it was a noseblunt in the halfpipe or a crook 180 on the ledges. One of my other favorites was Ethan Clothier. He skates with that "land or slam" mentality. He easily took more hard falls than anyone else in the contest, but landed the most stylish airs I have seen in a long time. Team kid, Niko Howard (intermiediate), finished 4th in mini ramp and 6th in street with a broken collar bone he suffered on his bicycle on Christmas. I also want to shout out to some of the locals: Shane Wreck, Lachlan, Cody and Lucas, Hannah, William, Austin and Jon - you all did a great job of representing the local scene. Congrats to everybody.

Finally, I've got to thank each and all that made everything happen: The guys from Minnesota did a ton in getting everything prepared so that the contest could run smoothly; Mike DeLuca for having the park prepared; the judges (Kris Markovich, Brown Dog, Ryan Taylor, and Solomon Mosley) did a great job in awarding the right kids; Joey did a good job with the timer; Jamie DeLuca for some incredible food; Big Joe for doing everything; and the whole staff of Progressive for keeping the place nice and clean.

I hope to see you all next year.
